A head-on collision between a car and a motorcycle in Bavaria on Sunday left a motorcyclist in critical condition and forced authorities to close a section of the A9 highway for nearly two hours. The crash occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m. near the Allershausen interchange, where a 32-year-old motorcyclist was traveling northbound when a 48-year-old driver attempted an illegal overtaking maneuver in the opposite lane. The vehicles collided head-on, ejecting the motorcyclist several meters onto the roadway. Emergency services, including rescue helicopters, were dispatched to the scene. The motorcyclist was airlifted to the Klinikum rechts der Isar in Munich with life-threatening injuries, including multiple fractures and internal bleeding. The car driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for observation.
Police investigators from the Freising district confirmed that preliminary evidence, including skid marks and vehicle damage patterns, supports the motorcyclist’s account of the overtaking maneuver. “The driver crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, leaving no time for evasive action,” said a spokesperson for the Bavarian State Police . The driver has been charged with reckless endangerment and is undergoing further psychological and sobriety testing. Authorities have not ruled out additional charges pending toxicology results.
The accident highlights ongoing concerns about distracted and aggressive driving on German highways. According to the German Road Safety Council (DVR), overtaking violations account for nearly 12% of fatal crashes on federal highways in 2025, up from 9% in 2020. “Drivers continue to underestimate the risks of crossing into oncoming traffic, especially on high-speed sections,” said DVR spokesperson Thomas Mitschke. “Even a momentary lapse can have irreversible consequences.”
Emergency response teams praised the rapid coordination between local fire departments, rescue services, and traffic control. “The closure of the A9 caused significant delays, but public safety took priority,” said a spokesperson for the Upper Bavaria emergency services . The highway reopened to traffic just before 1:15 p.m., though investigators continue to cordon off the crash site for evidence collection.
The motorcyclist’s condition remains guarded as of late Sunday evening. Family members, who requested anonymity, were notified and are en route to the hospital. The Bavarian State Police have launched a public awareness campaign targeting overtaking violations, urging drivers to “obey speed limits and maintain safe distances.” The campaign will include increased patrols and digital signage along the A9 corridor throughout June.
