Two missing after leisure boat collides with cargo ship off Swedens Tjörn island
A leisure boat collided with a cargo ship northwest of Älgön near Tjörn on Tuesday evening, resulting in a large-scale rescue operation. Two people were rescued, but a woman and a girl remain missing.
The accident occurred around 10:00 PM on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. The leisure boat, carrying a family of four, collided with a Norwegian-flagged cargo ship. The father and son were rescued from the water and taken to the hospital by ambulance. The son is being treated in the pediatric intensive care unit, while the father is in better condition and has been able to speak with the police.
A extensive search operation was launched involving eight boats, sonar, divers, and drones. However, the search was paused at 2:30 AM due to darkness, rain, and wind. "We are searching in, on, and under the water and along the shorelines. The wind is making it difficult, along with the darkness," said Niclas Härenstam, press spokesperson for the Swedish Maritime Administration.
The search will resume at daybreak with helicopters. "We have searched large areas, very large areas with boats, drones, and divers. We can't do much in the dark," Härenstam added. Some units will remain on site overnight.
The cargo ship, which is 90 meters long, was en route to the Kattegat but has returned for inspection. The exact circumstances of the collision are unclear due to poor visibility. "It was on its way out into the Kattegat but has turned back now to be inspected," Härenstam said.
The weather conditions at the time of the accident were challenging, with rain, wind, and fog. "It has been difficult weather but not extremely bad. Windy, foggy, and above all, a real downpour at the time of the accident," Härenstam noted.
Personal belongings and clothing from the boat were found floating on the water, according to the police. The search operation has been extensive, covering large areas with various resources.
The rescued father and son were taken to the hospital, with the son in the pediatric intensive care unit. The condition of the father is better, and he has been able to speak with the police.
The search for the missing mother and daughter will continue at daybreak with the assistance of helicopters.
