Orthodox Christians mark Saint Alexanders feast day as Romania holds lottery draws with jackpots over 592,000
August 30, 2026, marks the commemoration of Saint Alexander, Patriarch of Constantinople, in the Orthodox calendar, a figure celebrated for his role in the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 and his opposition to the teachings of Arius. Born around 239 in Calabria, Italy, Alexander succeeded Saint Mitrophan as patriarch in 314 and later traveled through Thrace, Macedonia, and Greece to disseminate the council’s orthodox doctrines .
In Romania, the day is observed as the name day for Alexander and its derivatives, including Alex, Sandra, and Săndel, among others. The Orthodox calendar also notes the remembrance of Saint Varlaam, Metropolitan of Moldavia, and Saint John of Râșca and Secu .
Historical events tied to the date include the 1984 launch and successful return of the space shuttle Discovery, as well as the 1940 Vienna Dictate, in which Germany and Italy compelled Romania to cede Northern Transylvania to Hungary. The 2021 withdrawal of the last U.S. troops from Afghanistan, led by General Christopher T. Donahue, also occurred on August 30, ending nearly 20 years of military engagement .
In Romania, the national lottery announced draws for Loto 6/49, Noroc, Joker, Noroc Plus, Loto 5/40, and Super Noroc on Sunday afternoon. The Loto 6/49 jackpot reached over 3.11 million lei (€592,000), while Joker’s top prize exceeded 5.11 million lei (€972,600). The previous Thursday’s draws awarded 18,111 prizes totaling over 1.42 million lei .
The day additionally recalls the 1877 Battle of Grivița during Romania’s War of Independence, where Romanian forces captured two Ottoman redoubts after repeated assaults, with Major Gheorghe Șonțu among the notable casualties .
