Mbappé hat-trick powers Real Madrid past Real Sociedad in Mourinhos Bernabéu return
Kylian Mbappé scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 4-1 in José Mourinho’s first home match back at the Santiago Bernabéu, extending their perfect start to the La Liga season with a second consecutive win.
Mbappé opened the scoring in the 40th minute after a pass from Federico Valverde, capitalizing on a clever touch to beat goalkeeper Álex Remiro. Luka Sučić equalized for Real Sociedad four minutes later, capitalizing on a defensive error. The French forward restored Madrid’s lead in the 60th minute, then completed his treble in the 80th. Vinícius Júnior added the fourth in the 68th, set up by Jude Bellingham, who finished the match with two assists.
Mourinho, returning to the Bernabéu 13 years after his previous stint, fielded the same starting lineup that secured a 2-1 victory at Espanyol in his debut. The Portuguese coach acknowledged the team’s slow first-half start, telling reporters, “We weren’t pressing well. We adjusted at halftime, and in the second half, it could have been 4, 5, 6 goals.” Valverde added that the team “fixed the pressing” to regain control.
Before kickoff, World Cup winners Marc Cucurella of Real Madrid and Real Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal presented the trophy to fans. The match marked the league debut of new signing Yan Diomande, who entered as a substitute in the 84th minute.
Real Sociedad, last season’s Copa del Rey champions, had early chances, including a volley from Sergio Gómez that narrowly missed Thibaut Courtois’ goal. Courtois also denied Oyarzabal in the 10th minute, while Remiro made saves against Mbappé and Vinícius in the opening exchanges.
The Bernabéu crowd, initially restless, whistled at moments in the first half but ended the match with ovations. Mourinho downplayed the personal significance, stating, “I lived it calmly. I don’t like them chanting my name.” He later substituted Vinícius to a positive reception, gesturing to the crowd in acknowledgment.
