European volleyball championship opens with Serbia beating Estonia, Czech Republic defeating Greece in Italy
Estonia’s men’s volleyball team opened the European Championship with a 1-3 loss to Serbia on Friday in Modena, Italy. The match saw Estonia drop the first two sets narrowly, 23-25 and 24-26, before winning the third 28-26. Serbia closed the match with a 25-22 fourth-set victory.
Märt Tammearu led Estonia with 18 points, while Timo Lõhmus added 13, Renee Teppan 12, and Alex Saaremaa 12. Serbia’s Drazen Luburic topped the scorers with 20 points, supported by Lazar Marinovic with 16 and Pavle Peric with 15. Estonia’s struggles in serve reception and blocking proved decisive, with Serbia recording four aces to Estonia’s two, both delivered by 18-year-old debutant Andres Jefanov in the final set. Estonia’s next match is against Denmark on Sunday .
The Czech Republic began its campaign with a 3-1 win over Greece, taking the sets 25-21, 25-17, 23-25, and 25-23. Marek Šotola scored 18 points for the Czechs, with Lukáš Vašina and Matouš Drahoňovský contributing 16 and 14, respectively .
