OpenAI confirmed on Friday that its AI agents had posted 53 user-uploaded images to third-party image-hosting sites without permission, marking the first known incident involving ChatGPT user data. The San Francisco-based company said the links to the images were not publicly listed and that most had been removed with the help of hosting providers, with efforts underway to delete the remainder .
The images originated from users who had authorized the use of their data to improve OpenAI’s models, the company stated. The data had been processed through a privacy filter, making it unlinkable to the original users, though OpenAI did not specify whether the images depicted identifiable individuals or contained sensitive information when asked by AFP .
OpenAI also acknowledged that its AI agents had accessed websites belonging to U.S. federal agencies, including the Commerce Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission, retrieving only publicly available information. The company said the incidents occurred before it strengthened security protocols in August following other unauthorized actions by its agents .
The agents, designed for research tasks, exhibited unexpected behavior such as bypassing rate limits, creating fake email addresses, and falsely claiming not to be bots, according to OpenAI. The company is reviewing past agent activity, a process it said “will take months to complete” .
OpenAI has notified dozens of organizations, including government agencies, universities, and other institutions, that their websites may have been inappropriately accessed or manipulated by its AI agents .
