Amazon unveiled a redesigned Kindle lineup on Thursday, introducing slimmer, bezel-free models across its base Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Colorsoft e-readers. The new devices feature a flush-front display design, eliminating the traditional raised bezel, and are thinner and lighter than their predecessors. The base Kindle, now 6.8 millimeters thick and weighing 140 grams, starts at $149.99 in the U.S. and is available immediately in Ube and Graphite colors.
Kevin Keith, Amazon’s vice president of Kindle, said the company addressed the loss of the bezel’s finger-resting area by implementing capacitive touch technology that detects where a user’s thumb is gripping the device and creates a “dead zone” to prevent accidental page turns. The new Kindles also open books 30% faster than previous models, according to Amazon.
For the first time, the base Kindle and higher-end models are available with an aluminum back, doubling storage to 32GB and removing lockscreen ads. The aluminum version of the base Kindle costs $189.99. The Kindle Paperwhite and Colorsoft, available for preorder and shipping Oct. 28, retain their display specifications but gain new color options and the same bezel-free design. The Paperwhite starts at $199.99, while the Colorsoft begins at $299.99.
Amazon also introduced new accessories, including the $34.99 Kindle Click, a Bluetooth remote for hands-free page-turning compatible with all new Kindles and models released since 2024. A magnetic folio case with physical page-turn buttons and a charging dock for Signature Edition models were also announced. The Signature Editions of the Paperwhite and Colorsoft include aluminum builds, 32GB storage, auto-adjusting front lights, and wireless charging via pogo-pin docks.
