UK Prime Minister Burnham says government to review options for rejoining EU
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Wednesday the government would consider rejoining the European Union as part of a review of the country’s long-term relationship with the bloc.
Speaking to the BBC, Burnham said options ranged from maintaining the status quo to a customs union, single market access, or “we could go all the way,” explicitly referencing a potential bid to rejoin the EU. He told the broadcaster the current Brexit settlement had done “more harm than good” and that the government must assess “what is doable” and the pros and cons of each path .
Burnham first signaled the shift at the Labour Party’s annual conference in Liverpool on Tuesday, where he pledged to outline options for Britain’s ties with Europe at a U.K.–EU summit later this year . He had previously stated he would welcome the U.K. rejoining the EU within his lifetime.
The prime minister, who succeeded Keir Starmer in July, also said the country could not afford another decade of uncertainty over its European relationship . His predecessor had ruled out rejoining the single market or customs union, but Burnham’s comments mark the clearest indication yet of a potential break from Labour’s 2024 election manifesto on the issue .
