Liverpool rally to beat Atlético Madrid in Champions League opener with Mac Allister winner
Liverpool began their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Atlético Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday, as Alexis Mac Allister’s strike sealed the win for Andoni Iraola’s side.
Marcos Llorente opened the scoring for Atlético in the 17th minute, capitalizing on Julián Álvarez’s through ball to net his fifth goal in three visits to Anfield. Liverpool equalized before halftime when Dominik Szoboszlai converted Ronald Araújo’s flick to make it 1-1 on 40 minutes.
Mac Allister, who had publicly expressed frustration over his contract situation on the eve of the match, delivered the winner in the 50th minute with a powerful shot from the edge of the box past Jan Oblak. The victory came at a cost, however, as new signing Bradley Barcola limped off with a calf injury in the second half.
Barcola, making his Anfield debut alongside Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz in a Liverpool attack featuring three players each costing over £100 million, had earlier missed two clear chances to score. Alisson Becker’s save denied Álvarez a second for Atlético, while Oblak thwarted Barcola twice before Szoboszlai’s equalizer.
Atlético, coming off a 3-0 league loss to Athletic Bilbao, fielded Álvarez for his first start of the season amid ongoing speculation about his future. Llorente, who named his dog "Anfield" after scoring twice in Atlético’s 2020 win over Liverpool, extended his strong record at the stadium.
