European police boost operations against youth violence in Helsinki, Paris and Barcelona
Police across Europe intensified operations this week to curb youth violence and crime in major cities, with authorities in Helsinki, Paris, and Barcelona reporting significant incidents and enforcement actions.
In Helsinki, police cleared Alppipuisto park late Friday night after hundreds of young people gathered, leading to three reported assaults. One youth was hospitalized, and another was arrested for kicking an officer, according to Commissioner Esa Pennanen of the Helsinki Police Department. Pennanen said the crowd included both minors and adults, with alcohol consumption contributing to the unrest. “Whenever a large group of young people gathers with alcohol involved, the situation can escalate into assaults at worst,” he told Helsingin Sanomat .
In Paris, Prefect of Police Patrice Faure announced a tripling of investigators assigned to youth violence cases, increasing the force from 200 to 600 officers following recent high-profile incidents. The move comes amid growing concerns over violent crimes involving minors, Faure told AFP .
In Barcelona, two minors aged 15 and 16 were detained on suspicion of fatally stabbing a 45-year-old man in Manresa. Both had prior records, including seven arrests between them, and one had been released from a juvenile detention center in late July after charges of violent robbery and attempted homicide. Catalan Interior Minister Núria Parlon highlighted their reoffending despite supervision, calling for a review of how to handle “these types of violent youth” .
