Saudi Arabia to invest 6 billion in three Paris theme parks, creating 22,000 jobs
Saudi Arabia will invest €6 billion to build three theme parks near Paris under an agreement signed Monday with France, the French presidential office said.
The memorandum of understanding was formalized during a two-day visit to France by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The parks will be constructed in Cergy-Pontoise, about 30 kilometers northwest of Paris, on the site of the former Mirapolis theme park, which closed in 1991. The project is expected to create 22,000 direct jobs, according to the Élysée Palace.
Qiddiya, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, will lead the development. One of the parks is likely to be manga-themed, with reports and officials noting a shared enthusiasm between Macron and the crown prince for *Dragon Ball Z* as the origin of the idea. The themes of the other two parks have not been disclosed.
Macron called the project “a new global destination” in a post on X, while an Élysée adviser told reporters the concept emerged from a December 2024 discussion in Riyadh between Macron and the crown prince about their mutual interest in manga. The parks will be built and opened in stages over several years, though no specific opening date was provided.
The agreement was part of a broader set of deals signed during the visit, including cooperation in energy, artificial intelligence, aviation financing, transport, and health. A letter of intent was also signed to reinforce defense cooperation, covering cybersecurity, AI training, and military training, according to Al Jazeera.
The complex will include hotels, catering facilities, and housing for young workers and students, Macron said. The project’s scale was compared by French media to Disneyland Paris, which employs around 20,000 people.
