Germany’s new fuel tax discount took effect at midnight, triggering sharp drops in gasoline and diesel prices across the country. National average prices for Super E10 fell to €2.062 per liter by 8 a.m., a 14.5-cent decline from the same time on Wednesday, while diesel averaged €2.209, down 15.2 cents, according to ADAC data . The discount portal Tankerkönig recorded a 10- to 11-cent drop between 11:41 p.m. and 12:41 a.m. .
E10 prices fell below €2 per liter at many stations in cities like Munich, Stuttgart, and Leipzig, though regional disparities persisted, with fewer such offers in Hamburg and none in Cologne by morning . The tax cut of 16.7 cents per liter applies to fuel leaving refineries and depots, but there is no legal obligation for stations to pass the full reduction to consumers .
The measure follows September, the most expensive month for fuel on record, which had also pushed up inflation . ADAC noted it would monitor whether the typical midday price hikes—often exceeding 20 cents—offset the discount later in the day .
