China’s Long March 7A rocket failed shortly after liftoff on Aug. 10, 2026, destroying the ChinaSat-4B communications satellite it carried, state media and international outlets reported. The rocket launched at 20:02 local time from the Wenchang space launch site on the southern island of Hainan before an in-flight anomaly caused the mission to fail .
The cause of the failure remains under investigation, according to China’s state-run Xinhua news agency . Footage circulating online showed the rocket exploding minutes after departure .
Meanwhile, Rocket Lab announced the establishment of Rocket Lab Germany to provide sovereign space launch capabilities to Europe . The U.S.-New Zealand aerospace manufacturer also secured a 2028 launch contract with Kepler Communications for optical relay satellites aboard its upcoming Neutron rocket .
Separately, the European Union’s satellite internet initiative, positioned as a response to SpaceX’s Starlink, advanced toward launch, according to social media posts referencing EU strategic autonomy efforts . Russia is also accelerating its own Starlink-style network, with plans to deploy nearly 300 satellites by 2027, a Ukrainian intelligence official told Reuters .
