Israeli prosecutors charge settler with manslaughter in West Bank Palestinian activists killing
Israeli prosecutors on Thursday charged a Jewish settler, Yinon Levi, with reckless manslaughter in the killing of Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen in the occupied West Bank in July 2025, according to Israeli rights group B’Tselem. The indictment, filed by the State Attorney’s office, is the first such case against a settler for the death of a Palestinian in the West Bank since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, B’Tselem said.
Hathaleen, a prominent activist, co-produced the Oscar-winning 2025 documentary *No Other Land*. The charges stem from a July 2025 incident in the Palestinian village of Umm al-Khair, where settlers operating a large excavator triggered a confrontation with residents. Footage released by B’Tselem shows Levi drawing a firearm and shooting in Hathaleen’s direction; Hathaleen is then heard groaning as he falls. Levi, who has been sanctioned by the United Kingdom and the European Union for violence against Palestinians, has denied firing the fatal shot. Reuters reported it was unable to reach his lawyer for comment.
The indictment also includes charges of illegal armed entry and malicious property damage related to the same incident. B’Tselem noted that since Oct. 7, 2023, Israeli soldiers and settlers have killed at least 1,100 Palestinians in the West Bank, including at least 240 children, citing United Nations data.
In a separate development, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and the Lebanese rights group The Legal Agenda released investigations into an April 22 Israeli strike in southern Lebanon that killed journalist Amal Khalil and wounded photojournalist Zainab Faraj. The groups stated that Israeli forces “knew or should have known” the women were civilians, as drones were present at the scene. HRW described the strikes as “apparently deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian objects, which would make them war crimes.” Amnesty called for the attack to be investigated as a war crime, adding that the Israeli military had subjected the incident to a “preliminary review” and implemented “relevant lessons.” The Israeli military previously stated it does not target journalists but has not responded to the latest allegations.
Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes overnight wounded eight people in southern Lebanon’s Tyre district, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, as U.S.-mediated ceasefire talks between Israel and Lebanon continued in Rome. Earlier, Hezbollah attacks killed two Israeli soldiers in southern Israel, prompting Israeli retaliatory strikes.
