Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump met in New York on Tuesday on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly to discuss proposals for an energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.
Zelensky told reporters after the meeting that Ukraine is ready to halt strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, including oil and diesel refineries, if Moscow agrees to stop attacking Ukrainian energy systems. “We are ready for any kind of format of energy ceasefire,” he said, adding that Kyiv had not received a “one-sided order” to stop such strikes and would only act reciprocally. He noted that the U.S. would share the proposal with Russia but said he did not know Moscow’s position .
Trump described the meeting as productive and expressed optimism that a deal could be reached, stating, “I think they’re going to make a deal, and I don’t want to say what the deal is.” He added that both Kyiv and Moscow are ready to halt fighting and that he has discussed the matter with Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin .
The leaders also discussed winter support for Ukraine, potential Patriot missile production licenses for Kyiv, and the prospect of a trilateral meeting with Putin. Zelensky emphasized the urgency of ending the war before winter, saying, “We will end this war, and President Trump will help us to end this war” .
