Zelenskyy to meet Trump in Washington next week amid revived US-Ukraine diplomacy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington next week, according to diplomatic sources cited by Suspilne. The meeting is planned around the funeral of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, which is set to take place at the Washington National Cathedral on July 28.
The visit comes amid a flurry of diplomatic activity between the U.S. and Ukraine. Earlier this week, Trump's U.S. envoy to NATO, Matt Whitaker, visited Kyiv to discuss deliveries of Patriot missiles and a pending U.S.-Ukraine Drone Deal. Additionally, Zelenskyy held a phone conversation with Trump's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on July 22.
The timing of the meeting is significant as it follows a six-month freeze in peace negotiations among Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington. Diplomatic efforts appeared to pick up on July 22 with Whitaker's visit to Kyiv and the phone conversation between Zelenskyy and Trump's envoys.
In a related development, Laura Loomer, a far-right American activist and close ally of Trump, met with Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Thursday. Loomer, who had previously been a critic of Ukraine and had amplified Russian propaganda, experienced a change of heart after witnessing an air raid in Kyiv. "Just experienced my first air raid in Ukraine. Sirens blaring. This is everyday for every Ukrainian," Loomer wrote on X during her visit. "I often said I don’t care. Looking back, that wasn’t very nice of me to say. We need to have moral clarity."
Loomer's visit and subsequent interview with Zelenskyy have been seen as a significant shift in her stance towards Ukraine. Trump shared a preview of the interview on his social media site Truth Social, labeling it "Very good!!!"
The planned meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump follows months of uncertainty and stalled diplomacy. Earlier this month, Trump announced that Washington would grant Ukraine licenses to produce their own Patriot interceptors, a crucial win for Ukraine as it faces a shortage of effective defensive weapons against Russian ballistic missiles.
The diplomatic efforts have intensified in recent days. On July 23, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Manila on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers' meeting. The two discussed U.S.-Russia relations and "the need to end the Russia-Ukraine war," Rubio said.
Zelenskyy's talks with members of the Trump team appear to signal a thaw in the U.S. government's attitude towards Ukraine. The announcement of the Patriot interceptor licenses, delivered alongside Zelenskyy at the NATO summit in Turkey, marked a crucial win for Ukraine.
The visit to the United States comes at a critical time for Ukraine, as it continues to face ongoing conflict with Russia. The diplomatic activities and the upcoming meeting with Trump are seen as important steps in addressing the ongoing crisis.
Zelenskyy's office has not yet confirmed the meeting, but diplomatic sources have indicated that the visit is being finalized. The funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham, a staunch ally of both Ukraine and Trump, is expected to be a key event during Zelenskyy's visit.
