The group entered the cave in central Laos last week to search for gold and other minerals before flash flooding and a landslide blocked their exit, forcing them to take shelter hundreds of meters inside. Rescuers located the five survivors on Wednesday, but hazardous conditions—including muddy water, sharp rocks, and unstable cave walls—delayed their extraction. The first miner was evacuated Friday night, while the remaining four managed to crawl to safety on Saturday, according to footage released by rescue teams .
Divers and local authorities continue to pump water from the cave and clear debris to access deeper sections where the two missing miners may be trapped. "The operation is far from over," a rescue coordinator told *France24*, noting that rising water levels and collapsing tunnels pose ongoing risks . International cave-rescue specialists have joined the effort, though no details on their specific roles have been disclosed.
The miners’ survival has been attributed to their ability to ration limited supplies and avoid hypothermia in the cave’s narrow, water-filled chambers. Video footage shows the men collapsing in exhaustion and relief as they reach daylight, their faces gaunt but unharmed .
Laos has a history of cave-related accidents, with similar incidents in 2018 and 2022 claiming multiple lives. The country’s rugged karst terrain and seasonal monsoons frequently trigger sudden flooding in underground networks, complicating rescue efforts. Authorities have not yet released the names of the trapped miners or the exact location of the cave.
