In Izmir on Monday, police dispersed a protest against the arrests with tear gas, detaining two demonstrators, including a lawyer, an AFP photographer reported. About 200 protesters chanted slogans such as “You will never walk alone” and criticized the government’s justification for the raids .
The European Union expressed concern over the arrests and the blocking of social media accounts belonging to rights groups. “The Commission is concerned about the recent arrests and legal proceedings initiated against LGBTIQ+ activists, human rights associations, and businesses,” said Christian Wigand, a European Commission spokesman .
Pro-government media framed the operation as a strike against “perverts” undermining Turkish families, while activists condemned the raids as an attack on human rights. Erdogan has repeatedly blamed LGBTQ+ individuals for Turkey’s declining birth rate, which stands at 1.42 children per woman .
