Russia suspended crude oil exports from the Sheskharis terminal at the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk after a Ukrainian drone attack, Reuters reported on Aug. 14, citing three industry sources.
The Sheskharis terminal, Russia’s main oil export facility on the Black Sea, handles around 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Operations were halted after a tanker scheduled to load oil turned around and headed for open sea early on Aug. 14 due to a drone threat, the sources said. The port then suspended both oil loading and crude intake after storage tanks reached capacity.
The shutdown follows a large-scale Ukrainian drone and missile strike on Novorossiysk overnight on Aug. 12, which targeted Russian air-defense positions, piers, and port infrastructure, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He stated that the operation involved Palianytsia jet-powered drones, Neptune anti-ship cruise missiles, and naval drones. Veniamin Kondratyev, regional governor of Krasnodar Krai, said the attack killed an 8-year-old boy and injured eight others, including a child.
Novorossiysk is home to a naval base used by Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and a major commercial port. The terminal was damaged during the Aug. 12 strike, according to monitoring channels. Reuters’ industry sources noted that nearly 1 million barrels of Russian crude were loaded per day in Novorossiysk in July, with loadings reaching about 800,000 barrels per day in June.
The suspension compounds disruptions at Novorossiysk, where three grain terminals had already halted operations after the Aug. 12 drone strike. Russian authorities issued a fresh drone alert for residents on Aug. 14, indicating a continued threat to the port area.
Zelensky vowed to continue strikes on Russian ports in retaliation for ballistic missile attacks against Ukrainian cities. “The occupation fleet and all the infrastructure supporting it will not be safe as long as Russian aggression continues,” he said. Moscow rejected Kyiv’s offer of a truce in the Black Sea on Aug. 14, with Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova calling the revival of the 2022-2023 Black Sea grain initiative “ill-advised.”
The Sheskharis terminal exports Russia’s flagship Urals crude, Kazakhstan’s KEBCO blend, and Siberian Light oil.
