Irish Oscar-winning actress Brenda Fricker dies at 81

Brenda Fricker, the Irish actress who won an Oscar for her role in "My Left Foot" and was known for her part in "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," has died at the age of 81.
Fricker's agent confirmed her death to the British news agency PA and the broadcaster RTÉ on Friday. She was the first Irish actress to win an Oscar, receiving the award for Best Supporting Actress in 1990 for her role in the drama "My Left Foot." In her acceptance speech, she dedicated the award to "all the people in Ireland."
Fricker was also well-known for her role as the kind-hearted pigeon lady in "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," where she befriends Macaulay Culkin's character, Kevin. This role made her particularly famous in the German-speaking world.
In Ireland, Fricker was considered one of the most respected actresses of her generation, according to the Irish Times. She had a career spanning over six decades on stage and screen.
Earlier this year, Dublin City Council announced that Fricker would receive the "Freedom of the City of Dublin" award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Irish arts and culture.
Fricker's memoirs, titled "She Died Young," were published recently. Her agent, Phil Belfield, released a statement saying, "We will never see anyone like her again, and the world is poorer without her presence. I was honored to know her, love her, and work with her. She will always have a special place in my heart, as well as in the hearts of so many film and television fans around the world."
Fricker's career began in the 1960s, and she appeared in numerous films, television shows, and stage productions. She was one of the original stars of the BBC medical drama "Casualty," playing nurse Megan Roach from the show's inception in 1986 and appearing in over 70 episodes over the following two decades.
She also appeared in other notable films such as "The Field," "A Time to Kill," and "Veronica Guerin."
