British tourist sparks outrage after criticising Auschwitz cafe prices and decaf coffee
A British tourist has sparked widespread outrage after criticizing the prices and lack of decaf coffee at a cafe near the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Museum in Poland. Lyn, 70, who posts on TikTok under the handle freespirit390, shared a video reviewing the cafe, which has since been viewed over 4 million times .
In her original post, Lyn complained about the cost and quality of drinks at the eatery, located near the entrance of the former Nazi extermination camp. Social media users quickly condemned her remarks as inappropriate, given the site’s historical significance, where over 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, were killed during World War II .
Lyn later defended her comments in follow-up videos, arguing that the cafe was separate from the memorial site. “No-one died in the cafe. No-one died there. No-one was gassed there,” she said, adding that she had visited Auschwitz to “pay her respects” and found historical sites interesting . She also questioned the commercialization of the site, asking, “Is it right that Auschwitz is making money from a death camp?” .
The backlash prompted Lyn to clarify that she had not intended to offend anyone, insisting her video was misunderstood. She reported inappropriate comments about the Holocaust left under her post and maintained that her criticism was about the cafe’s service, not the memorial itself .
