Two killed as German-registered motor glider crashes in Croatias Velebit mountains
A small German-registered aircraft crashed in Croatia’s Velebit mountains near the coastal city of Zadar on Friday, killing both people on board, Croatian police said. The wreckage of the motor glider and the bodies of its two passengers were found after a lengthy search in difficult terrain.
The two-seat Diamond HK36 Super Dimona was traveling from the Czech Republic to Zadar when contact was lost after 4 p.m. local time, prompting civil defense teams, fire brigades, and mountain rescue services to launch a search operation. Croatian authorities initially provided no details on the nationality or identity of the victims, though the Czech Foreign Ministry confirmed they were not Czech citizens .
The crash site was located in Paklenica National Park, about 60 kilometers northeast of Zadar, according to a police statement. The search concluded around 10 p.m. local time when rescuers discovered the aircraft and the two fatalities .
Tracking data from Flight Radar and Flight Aware indicated the aircraft was an ultralight HK36TC Eco Super Dimona, manufactured by Austria’s Diamond Aircraft . Croatian police said an investigation into the cause of the crash would begin on Saturday.
