Zelenskyy hails "more constructive" Ukraine-Armenia ties after call with Pashinyan
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan held a phone call on Wednesday, Aug. 12, to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional developments, according to multiple reports.
Zelenskyy described relations between Ukraine and Armenia as “becoming even more constructive” and emphasized the importance of maintaining continuous dialogue. In a Facebook post, he noted that the two leaders reviewed the outcomes of his May visit to Armenia and identified priority areas for further cooperation. Zelenskyy also thanked Pashinyan for congratulating him on the 975th anniversary of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, calling it “an important date for Christians throughout our region” Kyiv Independent.
The Armenian Prime Minister’s Office stated that Zelenskyy congratulated Pashinyan on his reappointment following Armenia’s June 7 parliamentary elections, in which Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party secured 49.8% of the vote. Russian President Vladimir Putin had not publicly congratulated Pashinyan as of Aug. 12, a point Pashinyan addressed on July 29, saying, “He didn’t want to, so he didn’t congratulate me. But that raises the question: who, then, was he talking to?” Kyiv Post.
The call reflects intensifying political contacts between Kyiv and Yerevan. Zelenskyy’s May trip to Armenia marked the first visit by a Ukrainian president to the country in 24 years. During that visit, Ukraine expressed support for Armenia’s efforts to strengthen ties with the European Union and offered to back Yerevan’s pro-European initiatives Kyiv Post.
The leaders also discussed regional security threats and economic cooperation. Zelenskyy proposed reviving the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation and holding its next meeting in Kyiv Kyiv Post.
Armenia has been shifting its foreign policy away from traditional dependence on Moscow toward closer relations with Europe and the U.S. This shift follows the deterioration of Russia-Armenia relations after Russia failed to prevent Azerbaijan’s September 2023 offensive into Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed enclave internationally recognized as Azerbaijani territory Kyiv Independent.
