Ferry fire death toll rises to 76 off Philippine island of Coron
The death toll from a ferry fire off the western Philippines rose to 76 on Saturday after the coast guard confirmed the discovery of 41 more bodies aboard the burnt-out vessel, the M/V June Aster.
The blaze broke out Wednesday evening about 2.2 kilometers offshore near Coron in Palawan province, as the ferry approached its destination after sailing from Manila. Coast guard spokeswoman Noemie Cayabyab told AFP on Friday that the initial transfer of bodies had been capped at 30 due to the capacity of the patrol vessel transporting them.
Thirty passengers, including two Chilean nationals, and 13 crew members have been rescued, while about 50 people remain unaccounted for, according to the coast guard. Authorities dug 70 shallow graves in Coron on Saturday to hold the victims’ remains until DNA testing is completed, Kristine Ablana, a tourism official serving as a spokesperson, told reporters.
Video shared by the coast guard showed the vessel fully engulfed in flames. Rescue efforts were hampered by bad weather and strong sea currents, which dragged the ferry from its initial position about four nautical miles off the village of Turda to 7.68 nautical miles away. The coast guard coordinated with nearby ships and coastal villages in case survivors drifted ashore.
