Zelensky dismisses Ukraines ambassador to US amid diplomatic reshuffle
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Olha Stefanishyna from her post as Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, according to a presidential decree published on Aug. 3, 2026. The decree, No. 696/2026, was posted on the president’s official website and stated: “To dismiss Olga Vitaliivna Stefanishyna from the position of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States of America” .
Stefanishyna had served in the role for nearly a year, having been appointed by Zelensky on Aug. 27, 2025. Before her ambassadorship, she spent a month as the president’s special envoy for developing cooperation with the U.S. after stepping down as deputy prime minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration .
In a Facebook post, Stefanishyna said her departure was “my own decision, driven by personal circumstances” and called her tenure in Washington “the greatest honour” of her life. She added that Ukraine had “increased the supply of American weapons and maintained support precisely when the political climate in Washington was shifting against us” .
The dismissal comes amid a broader reshuffle of Ukraine’s government and diplomatic corps. In late July, Zelensky announced replacements for top officials, including the prime minister and defense minister, and a review of ambassadorial appointments is underway . The president has not publicly stated a reason for Stefanishyna’s removal, and her successor has not been named .
Zelensky also dismissed Ukraine’s ambassadors to Singapore, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Austria, Tunisia, Libya, and its permanent representative to UNESCO, according to reports citing the presidential website . At a meeting of Ukrainian diplomatic missions in Kyiv on Aug. 3, Zelensky said the key performance indicator for ambassadors would now be their ability to secure weapons and military technology for Ukraine, urging a focus on “how many weapons they can obtain” and “where missiles for air defense can be sourced” in their host countries .
Stefanishyna had previously told reporters that Zelensky had not asked for her resignation, according to Ukraine’s Suspilne public broadcaster . The dismissal coincides with Ukraine’s ongoing negotiations with the U.S. over additional Patriot missile systems and potential domestic production of such missiles .
