US marks first Dolly Parton Day with parades and state proclamations honoring late country legend
The United States celebrated its first Dolly Parton Day on Friday, honoring the late country legend who died last month at 80. California and Ohio were among the states marking Sept. 25 as the official day, a nod to Parton’s hit song *9 to 5* .
California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed SB931 this week, establishing the day statewide. “We could all take a little more inspiration from Dolly,” Newsom said in a statement, calling the bill “perhaps the least controversial” he had ever signed. He added that the day would serve as an annual reminder to live with “joy, grace, and generosity” .
Fans across the country marked the occasion with colorful parades and pink-themed displays, celebrating Parton’s life and legacy . Tennessee, Parton’s home state, already observes a Dolly Parton Day on her birthday, Jan. 19, but cities like Nashville also proclaimed Sept. 25 in her honor .
