Hannover 96 fired coach Christian Titz on Monday after a poor start to the 2. Bundesliga season, the club announced three days after a 1-2 loss to 1. FC Nürnberg. The team, a promotion candidate, had won only one of its first five league matches.
U23 coach Lars Barlemann will take interim charge, preparing the squad for Sunday’s home game against VfL Bochum. Sporting director Jonas Boldt said the decision followed the team’s failure to build on last season’s momentum. “It was our shared goal to build on the previous season, with the justified hope that we could carry a certain momentum into the new campaign. Unfortunately, this did not materialize as desired,” Boldt said. “This decision now gives us the opportunity to realign ourselves with the clear objective that everyone at Hannover 96 moves forward together with full energy.”
Titz, 55, joined from 1. FC Magdeburg in 2025 and rebuilt the squad in his first season, delivering the club’s statistically best 2. Bundesliga campaign. However, Hannover squandered a near-certain promotion in the final three matches. Tensions with Boldt, appointed this summer, escalated over transfer policy, squad size, and the role of goalkeeper Pascal Loretz, whom Boldt signed from Switzerland but Titz dropped after one game. The club now aims to name a permanent successor quickly, with Sandro Wagner emerging as the leading candidate. Wagner, a former Bayern Munich and Germany international, was most recently an assistant under Julian Nagelsmann with the national team before a brief stint at FC Augsburg.
