Meta released its first open-weight AI model in over a year on Monday, unveiling Muse Glimmer, a 30-billion-parameter model available under an Apache 2.0 license on Hugging Face. The company also announced plans to publish the weights for its current flagship model, Muse Spark 1.2, in the coming weeks, according to the Wall Street Journal .

Muse Glimmer is designed for AI agents that run locally on consumer hardware, fitting into the memory of current MacBooks or PCs with a single GPU. Meta compressed the model to about 4 bits, reducing its memory footprint to under 20 GB, and included a helper model to speed up text output by up to 3.1x .

In a 6,500-word essay published Monday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg framed the release as part of a broader push to counter closed commercial models from rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. He argued that concentrating AI power in governments or corporations risks skewing influence toward large institutions, and pledged to offer free versions of Meta’s models to billions of users .

Meta’s benchmarks position Glimmer as competitive with Google’s Gemma4-31B and Alibaba’s Qwen3.6-27B in agent tasks like tool use and web search, though Qwen performs better in desktop and terminal operations. Meta acknowledged its test setup favored its own model .

The company also announced a $1 billion "Future is for Everyone Fund" to support U.S. communities near its data centers, alongside a new training program, Americas Workforce Academy, which graduated its first class last week .

Zuckerberg’s essay further criticized excessive U.S. regulation, warning that even a one-month delay in model releases could cede ground to foreign competitors, particularly China .

Meta returns to open models with Zuckerbergs plan to out-copy China and sell compute by auction Meta has released Muse Glimmer, the first open model from its new Superintelligence Labs. Its a 30B agent model that runs on consumer hardware once the weights are compressed, needing less than 20 GB of memory. In an accompanying essay, Mark Zuckerberg mounts an aggressive defense of distilling other labs models and calls for fewer restrictions on US labs, a direct counterpunch at OpenAI and Anthropic. An open-weight version of Muse Spark 1.2 should follow soon, according to the Wall Street Journal.
