Serbian President Vucic resigns to run for prime minister in October snap election
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic resigned on Sunday to run for prime minister in snap parliamentary elections set for Oct. 25, a move that also triggers an early presidential contest under Serbian law.
Vucic, constitutionally barred from a third presidential term, will lead his Serbian Progressive Party in the ballot as the party’s candidate. Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic will serve as acting president until a new head of state is elected, with the presidential vote required within three months of the resignation.
The decision follows sustained pressure from student-led protests, which gained momentum after a November 2024 train station canopy collapse in Novi Sad killed 16 people. The protests, initially demanding accountability for the tragedy, expanded into broader calls against corruption and for early elections.
Vucic, who has dominated Serbian politics for over a decade, addressed supporters outside the presidential palace in Belgrade on Sunday, saying, “This is the last evening for me in this building.” He added, “I have faithfully served you and my fatherland, Serbia,” before signing his resignation .
The prime minister’s office in Serbia holds more formal power than the presidency, though Vucic has maintained a dominant role in decision-making during his two terms as president. His shift to the premiership would allow him to retain influence even as the presidency changes hands .
