Andy Burnham began his premiership’s first high-profile diplomatic engagement on Wednesday as French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in London for a two-day visit, marking Macron’s first meeting with the new British prime minister.
The leaders joined King Charles III and Queen Camilla at the British Museum to view the Bayeux Tapestry, on temporary loan from France for a 10-month exhibition opening to the public on Sept. 10. Burnham called the tapestry’s return “a landmark moment” in Franco-British relations and cited it as an example of cooperation that had also helped reduce small boat crossings across the English Channel to a seven-year low, according to remarks in the House of Commons .
Macron’s visit included talks with Burnham in Downing Street, where the prime minister sought concrete outcomes on post-Brexit cooperation with the European Union .
The diplomatic engagement came as Burnham faced early domestic pressures. During his first Prime Minister’s Questions, Labour backbencher Tan Singh Dhesi urged him to commit to increasing defense spending to 3% of GDP by 2030, warning that “cash, not vibes” was needed to counter Russian threats. Burnham initially appeared to endorse the target but later clarified through Downing Street that no formal commitment had been made .
Burnham also reaffirmed fiscal responsibility in Parliament, stating the government would adhere to self-imposed budget rules to reduce debt . His first major policy speech is expected later this month, with the budget to follow in late October.
