Brussels Airport halts runway traffic after drone sighting triggers safety protocol
Traffic at Brussels Airport was interrupted on Friday evening after a drone sighting triggered a mandatory aviation safety procedure, Belgian air traffic control operator Skeyes said on Saturday.
The protocol requires runway traffic to be halted for 30 minutes following the last reported sighting of an unauthorized drone, according to Skeyes spokesperson Kurt Verwilgen. The suspension lasted approximately half an hour, though the operator did not specify the exact timeline of the disruption or the number of affected flights. Verwilgen confirmed the drone was no longer visible after the initial sightings but declined to provide details on its size, model, or origin.
Skeyes, which oversees air traffic control in Belgian airspace, did not disclose who reported the drone or whether authorities such as police or aviation security were involved in the response. The procedure is designed to mitigate collision risks for aircraft during low-altitude takeoff and landing phases, the operator said. Brussels Airport, Belgium’s primary international hub, typically faces operational delays or diversions when runway traffic is suspended.
Verwilgen stated that the drone safety protocol was activated following the sighting, but no further details were released on the incident’s resolution or any subsequent investigations .
