Deadly Spain shooting leaves three dead including pregnant woman in gang-linked attack

At least seven people were killed and 19 injured in a stampede at the Ashok Dham temple in Lakhisarai district, in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, on Monday. The incident occurred as thousands of worshippers gathered to honor the Hindu deity Shiva during the holy month of Shravan, according to district magistrate Shailendra Kumar .
Kumar told AFP that panic broke out after rumors spread that an electricity pole had fallen on devotees inside the temple grounds. Other reports suggested fears of electrocution contributed to the chaos, while Kumar noted that the arrival of two trains in quick succession had caused a surge in the number of worshippers. A section of barricading collapsed as people attempted to flee, he said .
Local reports indicated that many of those caught in the crush were women, with at least four of the dead identified as women aged between 44 and 55 . Bihar’s Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary described the deaths as “heart-wrenching” and announced compensation of 400,000 rupees ($4,180) for each victim’s family . State minister Vijay Kumar Sinha said the circumstances would be investigated . Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and said local authorities were assisting those affected .
The stampede followed a separate incident earlier the same day in which at least seven people died in a fire at a hotel housing religious pilgrims in Tarapith, also in eastern India, according to reports .
In a separate event in Spain, three people—including a 39-year-old woman eight months pregnant, a 62-year-old woman, and a 16-year-old minor—were killed in a shooting in the El Rocío neighborhood of Isla Cristina, Huelva, on Sunday night. The attack occurred at 10 p.m. when two masked individuals on a motorbike opened fire with a long gun before fleeing, according to the Guardia Civil . The unborn child of the pregnant woman also died. Two others were injured, including an 18-year-old in critical condition.
The Guardia Civil stated the shooting was likely a gang-related settling of scores, with the two women killed being relatives of a man known as “El Baba,” the suspected perpetrator of a 2024 murder in Huelva . The 16-year-old victim had no known connection to the families involved. The suspects attempted to burn their motorbike in a nearby pine forest to distract authorities but were thwarted by campers and firefighters . A judicial secrecy order has been imposed, and a large police operation is underway to locate the attackers .
