BIRMINGHAM, England — The European Athletics Championships concluded its penultimate day in Birmingham on Saturday with a series of high-stakes finals, including a dramatic shift in the women’s 800 meters as Switzerland’s Audrey Werro dethroned reigning Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson of Britain.
Hodgkinson, who claimed gold at the Paris Olympics after years of rivalry with American Athing Mu and Kenya’s Mary Moraa, saw her European title end as Werro, 22, secured victory. The Briton, a six-time global medalist, had entered the season with ambitions to break the long-standing outdoor 800m record but faced setbacks, including a defeat by Werro at the Stockholm Diamond League in June. “There have been so many rivalries over the last couple of years,” Hodgkinson said. “I am proud of my consistency to stay competitive and continue to fight and add more medals to my collection” .
Dutch athlete Femke Broeders-Bol, competing in her first European Championships since switching from the 400m hurdles, claimed bronze in the 800m and matched the Dutch record. “The dreams I had about the 800 meters are coming true sooner than I expected,” she said .
Jorinde van Klinken of the Netherlands added to her medal haul, winning gold in the discus throw after taking silver in the shot put earlier in the week. It marks her second consecutive European Championships with two medals, following her double podium finish in Rome two years ago .
Estonia’s Karmen Bruus advanced to the high jump final, scheduled for 22:07 local time, after clearing 1.90m in qualification—her first time surpassing that height in over four years. She aims to improve on her season best, with the bar set to open at 1.83m and rise incrementally to 2.01m . Liisa-Maria Lusti of Estonia also competed in the long jump qualification, seeking to reach Sunday’s final with a qualifying standard of 6.80m .
Sweden’s Andreas Almgren, a 31-year-old distance runner, entered the men’s 10,000m final as a gold medal contender, citing a flawless summer of training. “All the training I’ve done this summer has gone exactly as I wanted,” Almgren said. “I’m running to take the gold. There’s no doubt about it” .
The day’s schedule also included finals in the men’s triple jump, men’s 10,000m, and both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays, alongside qualifying rounds in the women’s long jump and 1500m . Italy’s Pietro Battocletti won the men’s 5000m earlier in the championships and was set to compete in the 10,000m final .
