Dyson unveils 499 toothbrush with built-in camera and AI plaque detection in Paris

Dyson launched the CameraJet, a high-tech electric toothbrush with a built-in camera, on Tuesday in Paris. The device features a 100,000-pixel macro lens in the brush head, a precision mouthwash jet, and machine learning to target plaque between teeth, according to the company. Priced at $499 in the U.S., £420 in the U.K., and €479 in Europe, the toothbrush connects to the MyDyson app, allowing users to view live footage from inside their mouth and receive feedback on their brushing .

James Dyson, the company’s founder and chief engineer, said the product took six years to develop, involving 661 engineers and 38 patents. The toothbrush uses a 16-million-line code system and an AI model trained on 470,000 dental images to detect interdental gaps in 100 milliseconds, triggering a mouthwash jet to clean those areas. Dyson stated that the device removes “up to 72% more plaque than market leading electric toothbrushes” and includes a non-foaming toothpaste and mouth rinse to avoid obscuring the camera lens, each priced at £8.50 .

The CameraJet’s camera functions as a “high-quality endoscope,” enabling users to see what their dentist sees, according to Dyson. The brush head cleans along the gum line while the jet releases bursts of mouthwash to remove plaque. The device includes a 12.5 ml reservoir for mouthwash or water, refillable in three seconds via a charging base. It operates with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing users to monitor brushing via the app .

Dyson, known for its bagless vacuums and bladeless fans, moved its corporate headquarters to Singapore in 2019. The company described flossing as an “awkward and time-consuming chore” and said its research showed people often miss plaque buildup between teeth .
