Macron hosts Trump at Versailles for historic 250th-anniversary dinner
French President Emmanuel Macron will host United States President Donald Trump for a private dinner at the Palace of Versailles on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence in a setting steeped in Franco-American history.
The dinner follows the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, where Trump is scheduled to participate in a working session with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday, 16 June, according to a senior U.S. administration official. No separate bilateral meeting between Trump and Zelensky is planned at this stage, French and Ukrainian officials confirmed.
The Versailles dinner was first proposed by Macron to cap the G7 proceedings and was confirmed by the Élysée Palace on Saturday, 13 June 2026. The palace described the venue as “a high place of Franco-American friendship where the 1783 treaty recognizing the birth of the United States was signed,” underscoring the symbolic weight of the date.
Trump’s itinerary also includes bilateral meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7, with Modi set to travel to France on 17 June for talks focused on strengthening strategic ties.
The diplomatic choreography unfolds against a backdrop of heightened geopolitical tensions. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned on Saturday that the rules-based international order is fracturing under the weight of superpower rivalry, calling for deeper EU-Canada unity ahead of the summit.
Analysts see Macron’s invitation to Trump as an attempt to reaffirm transatlantic bonds at a moment when European leaders are seeking to balance support for Ukraine with the need to engage Washington. The dinner’s historic setting and the anniversary theme are intended to underscore continuity in the alliance, even as policy disagreements persist.
