The reshuffle follows the resignation of Jens Spahn, who stepped down as the leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group on Saturday, July 19, 2026. Spahn's resignation came after he and his husband welcomed a child through surrogacy in the United States.
While the changes have been widely reported, an official confirmation from the Chancellor's office is pending. "The Chancellor will announce the personnel decisions when all open points are clarified," a spokesperson for Merz said on Thursday evening.
The reshuffle is part of a broader reorganization by Merz, who has indicated that he sees this as an opportunity to rethink the composition of the federal government.
