Portugals Pimenta wins second gold at 2026 World Canoeing Championships in Amsterdam
Fernando Pimenta of Portugal won the K1 5,000-meter canoeing final at the 2026 World Championships, securing his second gold medal of the event in Amsterdam. Pimenta, an Olympic athlete from Ponte de Lima, finished the race in approximately 24 minutes, resisting late attacks to claim the title eight years after his last victory in the same discipline .
In rowing, the Netherlands dominated the medal table at the Bosbaan course, finishing with four golds, three silvers, and three bronzes. The Dutch men’s eight defended their world title, edging Great Britain by 0.06 seconds in a race clocked as the fastest 2,000-meter time ever recorded. The team included Ralf Rienks, Finn Florijn, Wibout Rustenburg, Jorn Salverda, Sander de Graaf, Pieter van Veen, Jan van der Bij, Mick Makker, and coxswain Jonna de Vries . Germany’s Oliver Zeidler claimed his fourth consecutive world title in the men’s single sculls, while Romania’s women’s eight set a world record with a time of 5:51.88, led by Simona Radiș, who became the first rower to win two golds at three consecutive World Championships .
Ireland’s Fiona Murtagh took silver in the women’s single sculls, finishing behind Britain’s Lauren Henry, who reversed last year’s result. Murtagh’s time was 7:18.04, with the Netherlands’ Karolien Florijn in third. Margaret Cremen and Konan Pazzaia added another silver for Ireland in the mixed double sculls, finishing behind the Dutch pair of Roos de Jong and Simon van Dorp, who set a world’s best time of 6:15.80 .
In canoe sprint, Denmark’s Frederikke Hauge Mørcke won gold in the women’s K1 200 meters in Poznań, Poland, defeating Hungary’s Anna Lucz and Spain’s Sara Ouzande. Ukraine’s Liudmyla Luzan also claimed gold in the C-1 200 meters . Portugal’s João Ribeiro and Messias Baptista earned silver in the K2 500 meters, adding to their bronze in the K4 500 earlier in the championships .
Hungary’s Blanka Guzi won gold in the women’s modern pentathlon in Kujiang, China, overcoming a 34-second deficit to defeat Egypt’s Farida Halil. Guzi, a two-time world silver medalist, triumphed in the combined shooting and running event after strong performances in fencing, swimming, and riding .
