Drone and military incidents disrupt air traffic across UK, Romania, Belgium and Greece
Global air traffic faced renewed disruptions on Friday as drone and military aircraft incidents triggered shutdowns and delays across multiple European countries.
In the UK, a military aircraft’s flight plan containing “spurious” data caused a four-hour outage in the National Air Traffic Services system on Tuesday, grounding over 2,000 flights and stranding hundreds of thousands of passengers, the Financial Times reported. Kathryn Leahy, a Nats operations officer, told airport and airline managers that the system lacked a dedicated backup due to an ongoing overhaul and the high cost of duplicating data, according to four people briefed on the incident. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander summoned Nats chief executive Martin Rolfe to a meeting on Wednesday, giving him a week to report on the causes and commissioning an independent review by the Civil Aviation Authority. Rolfe ruled out a cyberattack, while Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary accused him of “telling lies to save his own skin” and called his position “untenable” .
Romania’s Defense Ministry reported multiple drone fragments, some with explosives, found along its Black Sea coast and near the Ukrainian border on Friday. Teams neutralized at least one explosive-laden fragment in Tulcea County and recovered others from beaches and waters, including an interceptor drone. Authorities said the incidents followed repeated warnings about Russian strikes in Ukraine’s Odesa region potentially sending debris into Romanian territory .
Belgium’s Zaventem Airport briefly halted landings between 21:45 and 22:10 on Friday after a drone sighting, diverting three flights before resuming operations with no anomalies found .
Greece reported 10 violations of its airspace by Turkish aircraft, including four armed F-16s and three unmanned drones, leading to two engagements with Greek interceptors over the Aegean Sea .
