Tesla recalls nearly 3 million vehicles in China over door handle and driver monitoring flaws

Tesla is recalling nearly 3 million electric vehicles in China over safety concerns with flush door handles and driver monitoring systems, according to announcements by Chinese regulators on Friday.
The recall affects 2.98 million Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model X and Model S vehicles, both China-made and imported, due to poorly marked mechanical emergency door release handles, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation stated. The handles, which are hidden when not in use, may be difficult to locate in an emergency, such as after a collision that cuts power to the electronic door system. Tesla will address the issue by adding warning labels and issuing a software update to enable automatic window opening after a crash .
A separate recall covers 2.7 million Tesla vehicles in China due to inadequate driver monitoring when the car’s advanced driver assistance system is active. The current system, which relies on steering wheel torque, fails to reliably detect if the driver is looking away from the road, according to the regulator. Tesla plans to update the software to incorporate the interior camera for additional monitoring .
The recalls are part of a broader action involving nine automakers in China, totaling 4.3 million vehicles—the largest in the country’s history—over similar door handle safety risks. Xiaomi is recalling 390,000 vehicles, Leapmotor 370,000, and other manufacturers including Geely and XPeng are also affected. The moves follow China’s February announcement that it will ban flush door handles starting in 2027, citing risks in emergencies where electronic systems fail .
Chinese authorities have linked the ban to incidents where electric vehicles caught fire and rescuers struggled to open doors with hidden handles. In one case, a driver of a Xiaomi vehicle died after a crash and subsequent fire, with rescuers unable to access the cabin .
Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Friday .
