Pegula edges Cîrstea in three sets to reach Cincinnati Open quarterfinals

Sorana Cîrstea’s run at the Cincinnati Open ended in the Round of 16 on Wednesday after a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 loss to American Jessica Pegula, the world No. 3. The match lasted 2 hours and 5 minutes, with Pegula converting her fourth match point to advance .
Cîrstea, ranked 19th by the WTA, had entered the main draw directly in the second round and defeated Czech Nikola Bartunkova 7-6(5), 6-3 before benefiting from the retirement of Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya, leading 6-7(4), 6-1, 5-0 in the third set. The Romanian earned $81,752 and 120 WTA points for reaching the Round of 16 .
Pegula, who now holds a 3-1 head-to-head record against Cîrstea, will face fellow American Amanda Anisimova in the quarterfinals. Anisimova defeated Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova 6-1, 6-4 earlier in the day .
The Cincinnati Open, a WTA 1000 event with a total prize pool of $7,433,076, serves as a key warm-up for the US Open, which begins Aug. 30. Cîrstea, who announced in spring that she will retire at the end of the year, has stated her goal of reaching a deeper stage in a Grand Slam before concluding her career .
