Nordic-Baltic energy ministers gathered in Tallinn from Sept. 3-4 for the first NB8 energy ministers’ meeting, hosted by Estonian Minister of Energy and Environment Andres Sutt. The talks focused on supporting Ukraine’s energy supply ahead of winter, strengthening regional infrastructure resilience, and advancing a competitive Nordic-Baltic energy market.

Sutt emphasized the need for deeper cooperation, noting that interconnected energy systems require a regional approach to security and preparedness. “Energy security in our region today is not just about having enough electricity, but also about whether our infrastructure can withstand potential threats and how quickly we can restore energy supply in the event of disruptions,” he said.

The ministers, joined by a Ukrainian delegation, discussed coordinating aid to sustain Ukraine’s energy supply amid Russia’s ongoing attacks on its infrastructure. Lithuanian Energy Minister Lukas Savickas highlighted Ukraine’s expertise in protecting and restoring energy systems, urging the region to adopt these lessons. “The ongoing war has taught Ukraine how to protect its energy infrastructure, ensure its operational continuity, and restore energy supply to residents and critical facilities as quickly as possible,” Savickas said.

The meeting also addressed long-term recovery of Ukraine’s energy sector, including preparations for the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Tallinn in January 2027. Additionally, ministers examined threats to Baltic Sea energy infrastructure, stressing the need to bolster defenses against physical, cyber, and hybrid risks.
