OpenAI launched a new version of ChatGPT tailored for teenagers on Tuesday, automatically enrolling users aged 13 to 17 and those identified by the company’s age-prediction system as under 18. The teen-specific version includes stricter content restrictions on topics such as self-harm, violence, eating disorders, and sexually explicit material, as well as blocks on romantic or emotional interactions with the chatbot .
The platform introduces educational tools such as Study Mode, which guides students through problems rather than providing direct answers, and homework reminders that activate when users seek shortcuts. Parents can link accounts to set Quiet Hours, adjust features, and receive notifications in high-risk situations, including concerns related to eating disorders. OpenAI also added break reminders, warnings before uploading sensitive images, and disclaimers that users are interacting with AI .
The launch follows mounting legal and regulatory scrutiny. Families have sued OpenAI over cases where teenagers allegedly encountered harmful content, including a lawsuit by the parents of a 16-year-old Californian who died by suicide in April 2025. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has been investigating the impact of chatbots from seven companies on minors since September 2025. Competitors have responded differently: Character.AI closed open conversations for under-18s in November 2025, Anthropic restricted its Claude assistant to adults, and Google tightened restrictions on its Gemini chatbot after criticism from Common Sense Media .
OpenAI’s system uses over 2,000 behavioral signals, such as login times, to detect underage users and activate the teen version. The company stated that the new experience builds on existing safety measures, including parental controls and age-prediction tools. Voice functionality is disabled in the teen version to reduce human-like interaction, and the chatbot avoids expressing emotions .
Ann O’Leary, OpenAI’s vice president of global policy, said the company aims to treat teens appropriately for their developmental stage while shielding them from harmful material. The teen version also includes Study Hours, allowing parents or users to set times when Study Mode becomes the default .
