The Democratic Republic of Congo launched Ebola vaccine trials for frontline health workers on Saturday in Bunia, Ituri province, the epicenter of the country’s deadliest recorded outbreak. The first volunteers, all medical personnel, received the Ervebo vaccine as part of a nine- to 12-month clinical study targeting 20,000 participants.

Health officials aim to test the vaccine’s efficacy against the Bundibugyo variant of the virus, which is currently circulating in the country. Ervebo has previously proven safe and effective only against the Zaire strain, not the present variant. The trial follows the WHO’s confirmation of the outbreak in mid-May, with over 7,200 infections and 3,600 deaths reported since then.

Medical workers in Bunia welcomed the initiative. “We have daily contact with the sick, and it is important that we are protected so we can then protect our patients,” nurse Annie Banage told AFP. Dr. Nicole Nlandu said she believed the vaccine would reduce her risk of developing severe Ebola.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals and can cause fever, muscle pain, diarrhea, internal bleeding, and organ failure. The current outbreak is the most severe in the country’s history .
