International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors have discovered several tons of nuclear material at a previously unknown facility near Damascus, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said Tuesday during a joint press conference with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani in the capital. Grossi specified that the material was natural uranium .
The inspection follows a pledge by Syrian authorities to cooperate with the IAEA after the fall of the Assad regime. Al-Shaibani stated that the material posed no danger and was intended for peaceful purposes under international oversight .
The IAEA and the Syrian government announced they would jointly investigate the nuclear legacy of the former Assad regime .
Meanwhile, Al-Shaibani is scheduled to begin a two-day visit to Pakistan on Wednesday, where he will hold talks with Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to revive economic and defense cooperation following Syria’s political transition .
In a separate development, Syria has resumed nighttime tours of the ancient city of Palmyra, a site that was controlled by the Islamic State group in 2015, where the militant organization committed atrocities .
