AfD wreath at Hitler assassination memorial removed in scuffle, sparking backlash over Nazi resistance instrumentalization

At a memorial event in Berlin on July 20, 2026, marking the anniversary of the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler, Tobias Korenke, the great-nephew of resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer, attempted to remove a wreath placed by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. The incident sparked a scuffle and drew sharp criticism from the head of the Buchenwald memorial site, who accused the AfD of instrumentalizing the resistance against National Socialism.
Jens-Christian Wagner, the head of the Buchenwald memorial site, stated that the AfD has been notoriously instrumentalizing the resistance of July 20, 1944, and the resistance against National Socialism in general. "From the ranks of the AfD, the resistance of July 20, 1944, like the resistance against National Socialism in general, has been notoriously instrumentalized for years," Wagner said, according to the Rheinische Post. He added that the AfD suggests they are in resistance against various perceived regimes, such as the "Corona regime," "Merkel regime," "Ampel regime," or "Merz regime." Wagner also criticized the AfD for spreading historical revisionist and Holocaust-denying positions.
During the memorial event at the Bendlerblock in Berlin, Korenke attempted to remove the AfD's wreath, leading to a scuffle with security personnel. The wreath was damaged in the process. AfD politicians were not involved in the scuffle, according to reports.
The Foundation 20 July 1944, which organizes the memorial event, rejected any political instrumentalization of the commemoration. "The memorial service serves exclusively to dignify the memory of the victims and the resistance," the foundation stated. They also expressed understanding for the outrage caused by the AfD's annual wreath-laying ceremonies, which deeply hurt many relatives of the resistance fighters.
The failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944, was led by Wehrmacht officers including Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg. The plot aimed to kill Hitler, overthrow the Nazi regime, and end World War II. Stauffenberg and three other conspirators were executed on the same day at the Bendlerblock.
Green politicians Misbah Khan and Andreas Audretsch, who attended the event, expressed understanding for Korenke's actions. "Anyone who remembers the resistance against National Socialism must also clearly name who questions its lessons today," they said, according to AFP.
Korenke's actions were defended by Wagner, who said, "For the actions of Tobias Korenke, I have full understanding, more than that: he deserves a prize for civil courage against historical revisionism and extreme right-wingers."
