Sudan army drone strike kills 35 at North Darfur tribal court, rights group says
A drone strike by the Sudanese army on a traditional court in a village controlled by the Rapid Support Forces in North Darfur killed 35 people and wounded several others on Sunday, according to the rights group Emergency Lawyers.
The attack targeted Garra al Zawaya at around 1:00 p.m. local time (11:00 GMT) as civilians gathered for hearings on local cases and disputes, the group said. A witness, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, said the court session was held under a tree with local community leaders in attendance. Among the dead were four tribal leaders and two RSF commanders, the witness added.
The RSF’s self-declared government condemned the strike as “a horrific crime,” claiming 37 people were killed and 50 wounded. The Sudanese army did not immediately respond to the allegations.
Garra al Zawaya lies near Kabkabiya, about 150 kilometers west of El-Fasher, the army’s last stronghold in Darfur before the RSF captured it in October 2025. UN investigators have said violence linked to the RSF’s siege and capture of El-Fasher bore “the hallmarks of genocide.”
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has left tens of thousands dead and displaced more than 11 million people, according to the United Nations. The war has split Sudan in two, with the army controlling the north, east, and center, while the RSF dominates Darfur and parts of the south.
Drone warfare has become increasingly prevalent in the conflict. The UN reported over 1,000 civilians were killed in drone strikes in the first five months of 2026 alone. The RSF, which originated from the Janjaweed militia accused of atrocities in Darfur in the early 2000s, has consolidated control over much of the region following its capture of El-Fasher.
Emergency Lawyers, which has documented abuses by both the army and the RSF throughout the three-year conflict, said the strike damaged the court building, a traditional institution used to resolve local and tribal disputes. The group did not provide further details on the extent of the damage.
