Iranian president says contact with supreme leader "very difficult" amid secrecy over health
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Wednesday that communication with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was “very difficult at the moment,” according to remarks broadcast on state television .
Khamenei, 56, has not appeared in public since assuming the role following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on Feb. 28. Reports from top Iranian officials earlier this year stated Khamenei had sustained severe injuries, including burns to his face and lips, and required plastic surgery and a prosthetic leg, though his mental health was described as intact .
Pezeshkian’s comments followed a reported meeting with Khamenei under unusual circumstances. According to Iran International, the president was taken to an undisclosed location in Tehran, placed in a darkened car with tinted windows, and seated beside a man he could not see. Pezeshkian later questioned whether the voice he heard belonged to Khamenei .
The president publicly defended Khamenei, stating he had been received with “kindness and very sound logic” during their encounters. “Unfortunately, the current situation allows some malicious people to describe him differently and to present a different image of him,” Pezeshkian said .
Earlier reports indicated Pezeshkian had considered resigning in May, citing an inability to fulfill his constitutional duties. Iranian media reported that Khamenei had warned he would accept the president’s resignation if resubmitted. The regime has not released any audio or video of Khamenei, with one report suggesting such material could reveal his whereabouts or condition .
Khamenei, a hardline conservative cleric with ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, succeeded his father after the February attack. He served in the Iranian military during the Iran-Iraq war between 1987 and 1988 .
