East German bureaucratic error triggered Berlin Walls fall, retrospective reveals

BERLIN — The fall of the Berlin Wall on Nov. 9, 1989, was triggered by a bureaucratic error in East Germany, according to a retrospective published Sunday.
Günter Schabowski, the Speaker of the Politburo, misinterpreted a decision by the ruling body and incorrectly announced the immediate lifting of travel restrictions. His public statement led to crowds gathering at checkpoints, overwhelming border guards and forcing the opening of the Wall.
The event, described as a moment of historical irony, marked the collapse of East Germany’s bureaucratic socialism. The miscommunication by Schabowski became the catalyst for the Wall’s fall, an outcome that reshaped Germany and the Cold War order.
