Farage did not attend the official vote count, citing security concerns and a desire to avoid what he called a “political comedy” alongside Binface. He told supporters before the result was announced, “I’d be damned if I’m going to stand on a stage, after achieving a thumping victory… and be discredited and humiliated by nobodies” . Police in Essex later stated they had not advised any candidate against attending .
The by-election followed Farage’s abrupt resignation in July amid a parliamentary investigation into undisclosed donations, including a reported £5 million gift from a cryptocurrency billionaire. Farage had framed the vote as a chance for voters to judge him, stating, “Let them decide” . The investigation was suspended upon his resignation but is expected to resume now that he has returned to Parliament .
A total of 34 candidates ran in the election, with mainstream parties—Labour, Conservatives, Greens, and Liberal Democrats—opted to boycott, dismissing the contest as a political stunt. Farage’s victory marks his return to the seat he first won in 2024 with 46.2% of the vote .
After the result was announced, Farage posted on X, “The result in Clacton speaks for itself” . A planned morning speech in Clacton was later canceled, according to Reform UK .
