South African police recovered the ninth body of a woman in two months on Thursday in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, as authorities investigate a string of killings that has stoked public anxiety. Deputy police chief Tebello Mosikili said officers imposed a lockdown in Kempton Park and mounted roadblocks after three partially naked bodies were found this week. Police are investigating whether the latest discovery is linked to earlier murders or a copycat, Mosikili told journalists in Dawn Park, where the newest body was found on the side of the road .
Police have offered a 400,000 rand ($25,000) reward for information leading to an arrest, while the Democratic Alliance party added $31,000. A suspect, described as a foreign national, was arrested in July and appeared in court on Wednesday, Mosikili said .
One victim, 38-year-old Elizabeth Moselakgomo, disappeared on a jog and was found dead on Sept. 12 behind a hotel in Kempton Park. Her case gained attention after runners launched a social media campaign to find her. The first victim, a 37-year-old woman, was found naked and bound with cable ties on July 15 .
Gender equality commissioner Princess Eurika Mogane told Al Jazeera the violence feels like a “war,” with women “being hunted” . President Cyril Ramaphosa said authorities would leave “nothing untried” to find the perpetrator or perpetrators, according to local media reports .
